Capiz is a province located in the Western Visayas region of Central Philippines. It is situated on the island of Panay and its provincial capital is Roxas City, which is accessible by Land, Air and Sea.
Known as the Seafood Capital of the Philippines, it serves as a Gateway to the 3 other provinces of Panay Island, and its neighboring islands of Gigantes / Sicogon, Boracay, and Romblon.
About Capiztahan
The annual Capiztahan festival of Capiz is a walkthrough celebration to the province’s heritage and its founding anniversary. A journey through history, perceived through grand parades, cultural performances, traditions and even local delicacies! Gapisik-Pisik sa Kalipay / Where Fresh Fun Never Ends represents the province’s identity of providing fresh experiences for its community and tourists, from signature seafood delicacies to its vibrant dances and parades. Both taglines embody a rich culture combined with colorful festivities to be enjoyed by all. Gapisik-Pisik sa Kalipay directly translates into “jumping for joy” or “tumatalon sa saya” which mirrors how shrimp move when they are freshly caught.
History
Capiztahan is one of most highly-awaited events in the province of Capiz. Every year it celebrates the Founding Anniversary of the Civil Government of Capiz since its establishment in 1901. Capiztahan is a combination of Capiz and pista, which is rooted from the Spanish word fiesta that means festival. The festival is to remember the founding of the province, along with celebrating the legacy of Manuel A. Roxas, the first president of the Third Republic of the Philippines from 1946 to 1948. He was born in the town of Capiz, which was renamed Roxas City in his honor.
Relevance of Capiztahan
Capiztahan is a celebration of everything that is Capiz, including its people and their way of life, along with the province’s abundance of natural resources (especially seafood), historical past, and the people’s brilliance in a variety of fields. It goes beyond the local seafood feasts and vivid processions.
Everyone who participates in the Capiztahan benefits from the celebration, including the indigenous peoples, the local businesses, people with disabilities, the imprisoned, the students, the teachers, the commercial spaces, the artistic industry, and all of the Capiz community as a whole.
